The Roxy Theatre

The Roxy Theatre is a 500-person concert room on West Hollywood’s Sunset Strip, serving the Los Angeles music circuit with an unusually close-range scale. Its clearest distinction sits in the tape archive: Frank Zappa and the Mothers filmed and recorded concerts here across December 8–10, 1973, material that fed the 1974 release Roxy & Elsewhere and later releases. A stage built for opening nights

Lou Adler and Elmer Valentine opened The Roxy on September 20, 1973, with David Geffen, Elliot Roberts and Peter Asher among the original partners. Neil Young marked the launch with a three-night engagement, setting the early program between music, comedy and theatrical work. In March 1974, Adler brought The Rocky Horror Show to the venue for its first American run, with Tim Curry again playing Dr. Frank-N-Furter; the production ran for nine months before Adler co-produced the film adaptation. That same first winter, Zappa’s December run captured the room at full technical stretch: multitrack recordings from the concerts became core material for Roxy & Elsewhere.

How the room works now

The Roxy’s current calendar moves through hip-hop, alternative, rock, pop, R&B, indie, electronic and folk. Concerts generally use general-admission standing room, leaving the floor open for audiences who arrive early to claim their preferred view. The venue’s rental setup lists a built-in stage, bar, elevated VIP area, sound and lighting system, plus two dressing rooms; seated configurations reach 228 seats plus 22 booth places. Booking runs chiefly through touring bills, whose headliners usually choose their own support acts, while the venue accepts event and band inquiries.
