About The Regent Theater

The Regent Theater is a 1,100-plus-capacity live room in Downtown Los Angeles, inside the last remaining historic movie theater on Main Street. Its distinction is architectural and practical: a sloped former-cinema floor leads toward a proscenium and Gothic-inspired ceiling, while a second-story mezzanine offers an elevated stage view. The standing concert configuration retains the bones of a 1914 picture house, giving mid-size tours a room shaped for audience flow and theatrical framing.

A cinema remade for concerts

Built in 1914 as the 600-seat National Theatre, the two-story house arrived when South Main Street held about 20 entertainment venues. The National became the Regent in 1917; as audiences gravitated toward Broadway’s newer movie palaces, its program moved from first-run movies to second-run bills, then grindhouse and adult-film programming. Cinema operations ended in 2000.

Developer Tom Gilmore took the lease in 2006, putting the space to occasional art and performance use during Downtown Art Walk. In 2012, promoter Mitchell Frank and partners Artist & Recreation and Knitting Factory Entertainment took control and began conversion. The revived Regent opened on November 7, 2014, launching with Downtown Festival shows featuring YACHT, Connan Mockasin and Jerome LOL. The rebuild removed the cinema seats, added the mezzanine, and set capacity at 1,100.

What the room gives a show

The booking approach is deliberately wide: concerts share the schedule with themed dance nights, theatre, movie screenings, special events, parties and festivals. Its music calendar covers Latin, pop, electronic, R&B, indie, hip-hop, alternative and rock. For a concert, expect general-admission standing on a gently sloped main floor—about 900 people—with 200-plus more on the mezzanine. The attached Love Song bar and former projection-booth mezzanine make arrival and sightline choices part of the experience.
