About The Belasco

The Belasco is a Downtown Los Angeles concert venue with a 1,500-person capacity and a grand historic-theatre frame. Its distinguishing feature is the gilded dome above the main room, a surface equipped for projection mapping during the 2011 rebirth. The result is a full-scale standing concert room whose architectural ceiling remains part of the show.

A Theatre With Several Second Acts

Oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny commissioned the Belasco as a live-play theatre; it opened in 1926 with Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Its first decades included professional theatre and Federal Theatre Project programming, followed by a brief late-1940s movie-house period. Theatre operations ended in 1950, and the building later served Immanuel Gospel Church and Metro Community Church, an early LGBTQ+ congregation. By 1988, the theatre had fallen out of regular use.

A restoration costing over $10 million returned the building to public performance in 2011. The reopening arrived on March 19, 2011, with a capacity crowd for deadmau5; contemporary coverage described projections reaching the dome ceiling and balcony booths overlooking the performance area. That night established the building’s revived format: historic ornament paired with club-scale production.

How the Room Plays

The Belasco’s current programming brings together global touring artists, local sound scenes, and special Downtown events; its concert slate spans R&B, rock, metal, alternative, hip-hop, indie, classical, and electronic bills. Most shows use general-admission standing, with first-come seating options and tiered balcony cocktail tables. Beyond the main auditorium, the venue lists a Ballroom, Basement Chamber, VIP lounge, restaurant, wine bar, and annex spaces, giving promoters several room sizes and audiences places to reset between sets.
