About Woolwich Works

Woolwich Works in London is a multidisciplinary Royal Arsenal venue whose Fireworks Factory holds up to 1,800 standing or 900 in theatre format. Its distinguishing feature is scale with texture: a 1,504m² former-factory hall, where a period glazed façade faces the historic parade ground and an adjoining bar opens toward the courtyard. Expect a concert setting that can shift its stage and audience configuration, instead of one fixed club-room arrangement.

An arsenal building, retooled

Building 41 began as an ammunition factory and ordnance workshop in 1854. The south range, later the Fireworks Factory, was built as a carpenters’ workshop in 1877–78; after the Royal Arsenal closed in 1994, it held Firepower museum’s Cold War displays from 2001 to 2016. A 2019–21 restoration repurposed the complex for performance and exhibitions, and Woolwich Works opened on September 23, 2021. Its inaugural autumn made the proposition clear: an October 2021 opening event put Afrikan Boy, Mica Paris, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, Chineke! Orchestra, Protein Dance and Woolwich Orchestra on the bill. That mix gives the conversion a practical meaning: orchestras, dance and amplified music share one enormous room.

The shape of a night

Programming covers contemporary music alongside comedy, theatre, dance, cabaret, family shows and screenings, so genre allegiance gives way to a broad cultural bill. In-house programme slots are mostly invitation only, with project ideas welcomed by email; the venue also hires its rooms for outside events. For gigs, the Fireworks Factory can run long-axis, short-axis or in-the-round layouts and uses adjustable acoustic baffles, a dedicated control room and loading dock. Exposed brick, painted concrete, asymmetric glass roof and the bar-courtyard connection supply the character.
