About Troxy

Troxy in London is a 3,600-capacity concert hall set inside a 1933 Art Deco cinema, with a standing main floor beneath a retained Circle. Its scale is unusual: the building opened with 3,500 cinema seats, then its 2026 renovation restored basement spaces and audience routes to raise current capacity. For a gig-goer, that means a big-room crowd inside a venue built for theatrical sightlines and ceremony.

A cinema’s second, third and fourth acts

Built on the site of Stepney’s Commercial Brewery, Troxy opened on 11 September 1933 as a George Coles-designed cinema for Hyams & Gale Kinemas. Its opening film was King Kong, and its 3,500-seat scale made it England’s largest cinema at the time. The cinema closed in November 1960; three years later, the Royal Opera House created the London Opera Centre in its great hall, using an extended rehearsal stage matched to the Covent Garden stage. The Opera Centre closed in 1978, Rank converted the building into Top Rank Bingo in 1992, and Mecca’s final games ended in 2005. Refurbishment brought Troxy back as a live-events space in 2006. On 29 November 2008, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds played its first major public gig, a sold-out show that set the modern concert chapter in motion.

The room for a show

Troxy’s programme centres on live music and club nights, with indie, rock, alternative, pop, electronic and metal sharing the calendar alongside cultural events. Most large gigs use the ground-floor standing space and the Circle above; fully seated formats can place audiences in both the Stalls and Circle. The Circle includes preserved bingo booths, fixed tables and a dedicated bar, while the main room carries JBL sound and Martin lighting. The recent works added a basement cloakroom, expanded toilets and reopened circulation routes, geared toward faster entry and easier movement once the hall fills.
