About The Waiting Room
The Waiting Room is a 120-capacity basement music room in Stoke Newington, London, beneath the Three Crowns pub. Its distinguishing feature is physical proximity: a 4.8m-by-2.2m stage rises only 0.3m above the floor, giving full-band shows a close-range feel. Friday and Saturday nights shift the room into club mode, with leftfield electronic artists taking over after the live schedule.
The Drop becomes The Waiting Room
The present venue grew from The Drop, the Three Crowns’ basement room. In May 2010, Andrew Weatherall and Sean Johnston launched A Love From Outer Space there, a monthly Thursday session rooted in their shared appetite for post-punk, dub techno, disco and other slower-moving dance music. By September, the pair had extended the residency through December, playing five-hour sets between them without guest DJs. In December 2011, 586 Ltd — the team behind the Lock Tavern, Shacklewell Arms and Field Day — took over the pub and basement, announcing a February 2012 rename as The Waiting Room. A March 2012 report described the converted 120-capacity space, retaining its vintage tiling while adding projection-led visual changes. The former room’s club history resurfaced in September 2024, when Caribou played a four-night residency ahead of an album release.
Close quarters, broad booking
Live bills lean toward grassroots artists, with rock, indie and alternative central to the calendar; the venue works with outside promoters for those shows. The weekend club programme broadens the palette toward leftfield electronic music from London, the UK and Europe. The compact, elevated stage keeps performers in clear view across the single basement room, while the technical setup includes Martin Audio F15 front-of-house speakers, F18 subs and three F12 monitors. Head upstairs to the Three Crowns before the show for food or drinks, then head downstairs for the main event.
