About The Sound Lounge

The Sound Lounge is a 120-capacity, mixed seated-and-standing grassroots venue on Sutton High Street in south London. Its defining feature sits beyond the stage: this former bank operates as the UK’s first CarbonNeutral-certified music venue, with a fully plant-based kitchen and a programme centred on acoustic roots music. For a concertgoer, that means a small room designed for proximity, where performers and audience share a deliberately informal scale. The venue is ground-floor and fully accessible, including an accessible toilet and a ramp to the stage.

A venue rebuilt through several rooms

Co-founders Hannah White and Keiron Marshall began in 2012, when Marshall’s Merton Abbey Mills recording studio became the unlikely base for a DIY performance space: a £45 shoe-storage unit became the bar, pallets became the stage, and singer-songwriter showcases and trad sessions followed. That first small operation closed in 2015, prompting a larger, crowdfunded conversion of a derelict Tooting site into a 200-capacity venue in six weeks.

A developer then ended the Tooting chapter, displacing The Sound Lounge alongside other independent businesses. White and Marshall kept the project moving through Wimbledon and Morden pop-ups before opening the Sutton venue during the pandemic in December 2020. Young people outside education, employment or training helped transform the former bank, working with mentors through the build and gaining City & Guilds qualifications. On July 1, 2021, the Sutton operation received CarbonNeutral certification, a milestone that gives its food, bar and gig-going model a practical through-line.

The room and the bill

The booking brief favours support slots for touring acts and headline shows able to draw 50 or more people, making this a useful room for artists building an audience as well as established roots circuit names. Folk, Americana, blues, country, jazz, world music and rock all sit within its stated remit. Expect a flexible seated-and-standing layout, a supplied backline that includes piano, Hammond organ, drum kit and amps, plus a bar pouring local breweries and distilleries. The scale suits attentive listening, with performers close enough for quieter songwriting sets to carry.
