About The Lower Third (Denmark St)

At 250 capacity, The Lower Third gives London’s Denmark Street a grassroots room on the former 12 Bar Club site. Its defining feature is The Forge: the Grade II-listed former smithy at the rear, lifted out for redevelopment and returned above the new lower level. The result pairs a new Club Room with a piece of the building’s working past, giving a concert night an unusually tangible historical setting.

A forge’s second act

At 26 Denmark Street, the building began in 1635 as a stable, became a forge serving St Giles until the First World War, then operated as a carpenter’s shop and, after the Second World War, storerooms. Carlo “Fagin” Mattiucci opened the 12 Bar Club there in 1994. Its Denmark Street chapter ended on 16 January 2015 amid the St Giles redevelopment; an occupation followed within days, making the closure a visible fight over the street’s musical fabric. Outernet relaunched the site as The Lower Third in 2022, preserving the forge and placing the main stage alongside it. The venue’s name references David Bowie’s first backing band, recruited on Denmark Street.

The room now

The booking brief centres emerging artists, with bills encompassing electronic, pop, folk, indie, rock, country, hip-hop and R&B. The downstairs Club Room carries the main live setup, while the rear Forge takes 40–50 guests for acoustic performances; a Cocktail Bar supplies the social half of the night. A stage, lighting rig and in-house sound keep the focus on performance. Under-18 access shifts by day, while Forge events and Club Room shows past 23:00 run 18+.
