About The Half Moon (Herne Hill)

The Half Moon (Herne Hill) is a London pub-and-performance space with a current capacity of 65 standing or 36 seated in The Workshop. Its defining concert credential belongs to an earlier era: the pub’s live-music room hosted U2, Van Morrison, Frank Sinatra and David Bowie. Today, the listed historic pub and hotel couples compact live dates with a rear events room, making it suited to close-range, small-room bills.

Floodwater changed the stage

A pub has operated here since 1760, taking its name from Half Moon Lane. By the late twentieth century, the rear room had become a South London gig stop; U2 played there in 1980, and Island Records founder Chris Blackwell first encountered the band at the venue. On 7 August 2013, a burst water main flooded the pub and nearby properties, with water reaching five feet; the Half Moon then closed for almost four years. Fuller’s restoration returned it to service in March 2017, though the renovation reshaped the concert infrastructure: the former billiard room, recently used for music, became a restaurant. The post-reopening alternative is The Workshop, a rear function space for smaller events.

The room now

The current booking model pairs scheduled Saturday “Live Music” dates with private hire in The Workshop. Its own bar, audio equipment, projector and screen point to a flexible function-room layout, while wheelchair access broadens the room’s usability. Genre is billed broadly as live music, with no stated specialist lane; the venue’s earlier record supplies the rock-and-pop history. For a show, expect a compact setup: 65 people standing, or 36 seated.
