About The George Tavern

At The George Tavern in London, a 150-capacity gig lands inside a Grade II-listed East End pub. The immediate distinction is its surviving painted tile panels: one shows the building’s earlier identity, the Halfway House, complete with a horse-drawn haywain. That detail puts a particular visual frame around close-up indie, alternative, folk, rock and metal bills.

A pub saved for the stage

The current three-storey corner building rose between 1799 and 1819 on the site of the Halfway House, a mid-17th-century inn; remodelling came in 1862 and the pub interior received another refit in 1891.

Artist Pauline Forster bought the derelict building in 2002, after it had drawn developers’ interest for flats, and began using it as a pub and arts base; live music followed in 2004.

Its survival story has a precise shape. Plans to raze the adjoining Stepney Nightclub for flats were overturned in 2016 after a nine-year legal battle. A further 2019 agreement protected the George from noise complaints by residents of Botanical Lofts, built behind its smoking area. The result is a venue whose late-night programming exists alongside unusually hard-won legal protection.

The room at showtime

Indie and alternative lead the music slate, with folk, rock and metal alongside. Booking leans toward emerging acts and new promoters through regular showcases, while the calendar also accommodates exhibitions, talks, film and poetry. The room is an opened-up ground-floor pub: a modern bar runs along the rear tiled wall and cast-iron columns mark the floor. Arrive early for the clearest lines to performers on busy bills. Private and open hire help create a mix of gigs, launches and club-oriented events.
