About The Fox and Firkin

The Fox and Firkin is a 500-capacity live-music pub in Lewisham, south-east London, housed in a 1907 mock-Tudor rebuilding of the former Black Bull. Its decisive feature sits behind the bar: a rear garden that becomes a festival-style space for around 800 people during outdoor shows. The yard includes a stage, food traders, an old train carriage used for seating, and a brewery making beer for the pub’s taps. That split between close indoor bills and open-air gatherings gives the venue two distinctly different scales.

From the Black Bull to a brewery revival

The building began life as the Black Bull and was rebuilt in 1907 in red brick, with mock timber framing, paired gables and black-and-cream casement windows. In 1980 it became the Fox and Firkin, part of the Firkin brewpub chain begun a year earlier by brewer and entrepreneur David Bruce. The original Firkin premise joined beer brewed on site to a music-led pub atmosphere, placing Lewisham near the start of an expansion that eventually reached 44 venues. The chain’s brewing operation changed course after Punch Taverns bought the brand in 1999 and ended brewing; the Firkin name was retired across the UK in 2001. Lewisham supplied the return chapter: the Fox team registered the Firkin Brewery brand in 2020 and resumed brewing there in 2023, using a former Sainsbury’s depository warehouse directly linked to the beer garden.

The room today

Programming is broad and grassroots-minded, with pop and rock sharing space with Afrobeat, reggae-rooted sessions, DJs, bass music and community-led events. The team accommodates community bookings alongside private parties and smaller pub events, while the garden carries the large outdoor dates. For a gig-goer, the useful distinction is simple: indoor shows centre on the bar and purpose-built stage; summer events spread through the garden, where the train carriage provides extra seating and the on-site brewery turns the drinks list into part of the venue experience.
