About The Fighting Cocks
The Fighting Cocks is a 150-capacity bar-and-stage venue in Kingston upon Thames, south-west London. Its pull is proximity: the performance space is a compact separate room, built for crowds close to the stage and lively enough for a mosh pit, while the adjoining pub keeps the social side running before and after sets. Rock is the centre of gravity, with punk, metal and alternative bills alongside Monday comedy in an independent local setting.
Jazz foundations and a 2000 reset
The structure was established in 1890, and the house traces its musical activity to the 1930s. Touring jazz artists made it a stop during the 1930s and 1940s, long before the rock identity took hold. The present Fighting Cocks opened in 2000 in this nineteenth-century pub building, turning the back room into a regular live destination. A 2014 Guardian guide captured the working formula: unsigned groups, underground visitors and established acts on punk, metal and rock bills, with Banquet Records among the promoters bringing local artists onto line-ups alongside touring names. That mix gives the venue’s story a clear through-line: a pub room repurposed for loud, near-field shows, supported by Kingston’s own music infrastructure.
Close quarters, practical details
The Fighting Cocks accepts artist approaches through its contact form and lists a dedicated bookings email, useful evidence of an open-door policy for acts alongside promoter-led shows. Expect a rock-first room with punk, metal and alternative at its core, plus comedy and occasional DJ or private events. The venue has a bar both in the main premises and performance room; there is no cloakroom. Access includes a small set of entrance steps, a ramp available on request, an accessible toilet, and a side-of-stage viewing area with seating available by arrangement.
