About The Effra Social

The Effra Social is a roughly 200-capacity Brixton, London, pub-and-events room whose calling card is a large dance hall kept largely in its 1970s state. Its concert offer carries the informal scale of a social club: DJs and live acts share a building with a front bar, dining areas and garden. For a gig, expect drinks, food and performance woven into one sprawling Victorian venue.

A club room opened to the public

The building housed the local Conservative Club from the late 1800s until its November 2012 closure. Antic London stepped in, converted the premises into the Effra Social, and opened it as a public house on 28 February 2013. Brixton Blog reported that this marked the first general-public access in over a century; the building’s later dance hall and snooker room remained part of the conversion’s deliberately lived-in character. CAMRA still identifies the dance hall as unchanged since the 1970s.

A sharp ownership change arrived during the pandemic. In November 2020, Antic’s financial partners ended its management relationship with Effra Social and Portobello Brewing took over alongside a group of other Antic sites. Portobello reopened the venue on 12 April 2021 after a £150,000 refurbishment centred on the outdoor area and bar, giving the room its current operator while preserving its club-house framework.

The room today

Hip-hop and R&B sit at the heart of the concert slate, alongside DJ-led Friday and Saturday sessions, disco sets, bands and community events. The booking approach is broad: the venue promotes emerging local acts, while its hire programme welcomes parties, meetings and performances. Layout is part of the appeal: a large bar and dance hall anchor the public spaces, while the Churchill Lounge supplies a private bar, PA, microphones and capacity for 50 standing or 35 seated. Studio 180 adds karaoke and interactive darts for private groups.
