About Rivoli Ballroom
Rivoli Ballroom in Crofton Park, London, holds about 700 people and puts a functioning dance floor at the centre of the show. The draw is a remarkably complete late-1950s fantasy: crimson velour, chandeliers, Chinese lanterns and a gold barrel-vaulted ceiling surrounding a Canadian maple sprung floor. Concerts land in a room designed for bodies in motion, far from the standard black-box club template.
Cinema, then ballroom
Henley Attwater’s Crofton Park Picture Palace opened in July 1913 with a simple barrel-vaulted auditorium. The building later traded as the Rivoli Cinema; its final screen programme ran on 2 March 1957. Local businessman and dance devotee Leonard Tomlin then reshaped it for a different kind of communal night. The Rivoli Ballroom opened on Boxing Day 1959, with fixed perimeter seating, side-bar booths, hanging crystal balls and the sprung Canadian-maple floor; a members’ bar followed in 1960.
That conversion is central to the experience: Historic England gave the building Grade II status on 21 December 2007, identifying a rare survivor of cinema-to-ballroom conversion. Six months earlier, on 12 June 2007, the White Stripes previewed Icky Thump here in their first full electric UK gig since 2005. The packed, hot show required a hired generator to meet the band’s power needs.
The floor drives the programme
The current diary reads as a dance-first, promoter-friendly house: soul, boogie, rare groove, northern soul, reggae, hip-hop, disco and ballroom or Latin sessions, alongside occasional live bands and DJ nights. Private-party and film enquiries share space with ticketed public events, so the bill carries the mix of a hire venue as well as a regular club. Expect an open sprung floor, two bars, a smaller Gold Ballroom and optional table reservations; smart-casual dress is the published norm. This is a room for dancing close to the action, with concerts borrowing the same theatrical setting.
