About Oslo Hackney

Oslo Hackney is a London venue with an upstairs live room for up to 375 people, plus a ground-floor late bar and DJ space. Its defining feature is the building itself: a surviving piece of the original Hackney Central station, repurposed for gigs, club nights and drinks. Expect a close-standing show upstairs, with the bustle of the bar carrying through the rest of the building.

A station building finds its second life

The two-storey structure began in 1870 as a North London Railway Company station building and later served as a World War II ticket office. It became the sole surviving section of the original Hackney Central station after that station closed in the 1970s. In January 2014, Nottingham promoter DHP Family opened Oslo there as a venue-bar-club-restaurant, with owner George Akins describing a programme built around emerging bands and DJs.

Its launch arrived after Amhurst Road works delayed a planned December 2013 opening by blocking access. Oslo instead opened on January 17, 2014, beginning with its Valhalla club night; the formal launch party followed on January 18 with Andy Blake, Mr Wonderful, Charles Drakeford and Dollop DJs. That opening-weekend bill set out the house formula clearly: live music and DJ-led nights sharing the same converted station building.

The room today

Oslo’s programme spans indie and alternative bands alongside pop, hip-hop, R&B, folk, country and DJ events, making it suited to bills that move between emerging artists and late-night dance crowds. The upstairs room is the concert focus, while the downstairs bar keeps DJs running late. Reviews describe a small upstairs bar and a strong L-Acoustics system; the right-hand wall offers comparatively useful space nearer the stage, while shorter attendees may find sightlines tighter in a full standing crowd.
