About Oriole
Oriole is a 90-guest basement music room and restaurant in London’s Covent Garden, with a ground-floor Bamboo Bar above it. The distinction is its show format: a small stage sits amid dinner tables, placing jazz, blues and world-music sets inside a full evening of cocktails and Latin American-influenced cooking. It is designed for seated listening with food and drinks, while the upstairs room gives early arrivals a separate aperitif stop.
A Smithfield return, rebuilt in Covent Garden
Oriole began in 2015 in a basement beneath Smithfield Market, created by Speakeasy Entertainment, the group led by Edmund Weil and Rosie Stimpson. It paired the group’s cocktail-bar craft with live music in a compact speakeasy setting. In 2022, redevelopment of Smithfield Market ended that first seven-year run, sending the team in search of a new home.
The return came by way of Prelude by Oriole, a 34-cover Slingsby Place pop-up that opened in March 2024. That test space preceded a permanent two-level Covent Garden address, reopened on August 28, 2024. The change widened the proposition: a street-level bar and a plush basement restaurant where the music resumes as part of dinner service.
The room during a show
Live music runs Tuesday through Saturday. Standard nights deliver two early 45-minute sets, plus a late Friday-and-Saturday set; the cover charge goes directly to the players, and table bookings are recommended. Jazz, blues and world music dominate, with R&B piano, New Orleans blues and Latin-influenced jazz appearing in the current diary. Downstairs has the focus: low lighting, tropical murals, table service and sightlines directed toward the small stage. The Bamboo Bar has its own drinks-and-small-plates rhythm upstairs.
