O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire

O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire is a 2,000-capacity London concert hall built for theatrical scale: a proscenium stage, standing stalls and three elevated audience levels. Seated configuration brings capacity to 1,300. Its defining feature is the building’s former life as the BBC Television Theatre, still visible in a room whose ornate theatre bones give mid-sized shows a formal frame. A theatre, a television studio, a loud return

Architect Frank Matcham designed the Empire for impresario Oswald Stoll, and it opened on August 17, 1903 with a gala variety bill led by the Fred Karno Troupe. Variety continued until its final performance on September 26, 1953; three days later the BBC took possession and converted the auditorium into a studio-theatre. Cameras filled the former stalls, invited audiences sat in the dress circle, and programmes including Variety Parade and Wogan came from the stage. The BBC’s final programme followed in 1991. The live-music relaunch arrived on March 12, 1994, with Soundgarden playing opening night—an apt, high-volume reset for a building restored to its original public purpose.

The standing stalls suit viewers chasing the direct, full-volume experience; the dress circle, upper circle and gallery offer conventional seats and elevated views. A major September 2025 renovation upgraded sound, lighting and seating, according to Time Out.
