About O2 Academy Brixton

O2 Academy Brixton is a 4,921-capacity concert venue in London, housed in the Grade II-listed former Astoria cinema. Its defining feature is architectural: the auditorium’s sloping floor rises toward a vast curved ceiling, facing a stage modelled on Venice’s Rialto Bridge. That combination gives full-scale rock, rap, electronic and pop bills the visual drama of an arena while keeping the audience in one continuous room.

A cinema’s second act

The building opened as the Astoria on 19 August 1929, premiering The Singing Fool alongside a variety programme. Cinema, theatre and variety continued there until 1972, when the site returned as the Sundown club; Deep Purple played its opening night, and the venture closed four months later. In 1983, promoter Simon Parkes bought the building and converted it into Brixton Academy. The new venue opened on 7 October with reggae artist Eek-a-Mouse, establishing the concert-hall format that continues under the O2 Academy Brixton name.

The scale of the conversion matters to a gig-goer: a historic cinema became a standing-room concert hall with a maximum licensed capacity of 4,921, placing it among London’s larger indoor rooms while preserving its theatrical proportions.

Inside the room

The programme centres on ticketed live music, with club nights and comedy also on the bill; its broad run of bookings suits rock, alternative, metal, hip-hop, electronic, Latin and classical audiences. Expect stalls downstairs beneath the sloping auditorium, with elevated sightlines toward the large fixed stage. Bars, toilets, cloakroom and access facilities are distributed across the venue map, while merchandise is generally positioned in the main foyer near the entrance.
