About Hootananny Brixton

Hootananny Brixton is a roughly 450-capacity standing music pub and club in London, set in a Victorian building on Effra Road. Its useful split makes a real difference on a busy night: one room carries the stage and dancefloor, while a second bar has pool tables and space away from the crowd. The venue’s own description puts jungle, reggae, disco, post-punk, house and electronic music at the centre of its mix.

A pub remade, then defended

The address began as the George Canning and later became the Hobgoblin. In August 2007, a buyout ended the Hobgoblin era; the incoming operation renamed the pub Hootananny and marketed it as London’s first ceilidh bar, with Celtic music and dancing. Hootananny identifies September 2007 as its establishment date.

Its sharpest public test came in late 2012. A licensing restriction stopped entry after 11pm, prompting a petition that gathered 3,432 supporters. On January 13, 2013, the organisers announced that Lambeth had restored a 2am final-entry time. The episode is a concise marker of how late access shaped the venue’s working life.

The room in practice

Expect a pub-scale show with the option to move between the performance room and a separate social bar. The calendar accommodates promoted club nights, DJ-led dancing, bands and occasional comedy; CAMRA describes live music or comedy every night, usually with free admission. Hootananny also runs a performer-submission route, while its current listings span tropical psych, jungle and DnB, oldies parties, and punky live acts. A large front patio and spacious beer garden give the room breathing space before or after a set.
