About Bull's Head Barnes
Bull’s Head Barnes is a London pub venue with 70 seats and room for around 80 people standing. Its distinction sits behind the main pub: a compact music room whose jazz programme began in 1959, giving a riverside Barnes night out the scale of a small listening club. The current calendar also stretches into blues, Latin jazz, soul, pop, folk, rock, indie and open-mic bills, though jazz remains the centre of gravity.
A back room rebuilt for the music
The pub site reaches back centuries, while the present building dates to 1846. In November 1959, landlord Albert Tolley opened its back room for jazz, at the same moment Ronnie Scott’s began in Soho. Tolley’s room drew British players and visiting Americans during the 1960s; the venue became a regular London stop without leaving its pub setting.
A major reset arrived in 2013. Dan Fleming, who had run the pub and music room since 1982, retired as Geronimo Inns took the lease; the venue closed for refurbishment from June 30. Live music resumed on December 16 in a relocated room, with drummer Peter Miles, Alan Glen and John O’Leary’s All Stars opening the revived programme. The move shifted the music space into the former Thai restaurant and gave it its own bar and toilets.
The room today
This is a close-range room designed for attentive sets: tables and chairs sit around a low corner stage, with the audience arranged on two sides. The independent bar inside the room keeps concert traffic apart from the pub, a useful detail for quieter jazz, singer-songwriter and small-combo shows. Artists seeking a date can apply directly through the venue’s performance contact. For listeners, expect jazz-led programming with room for blues, Latin, soul and broader band bills.
