About Blackheath Halls
Blackheath Halls is a two-room concert venue in Blackheath, south-east London, centred on the Great Hall: a formal-theatre set-up seats 500, while a standing configuration reaches 1,000. Its distinguishing feature is Victorian purpose-built provenance: Historic England identifies Blackheath Concert Hall as London’s earliest surviving purpose-built concert hall. The scale can shift between seated orchestral presentation and a full-floor gig inside the same 1895 complex.
Saved for the stage
The project grew from plans developed in 1885–86 by local residents led by William Webster, who wanted a home for large concerts and meetings. On 26 October 1895, the Blackheath Concert Hall opened with the Blackheath Amateur Operatic Society performing HMS Pinafore. In April 1915, army authorities requisitioned the hall for pay offices; public performance returned in 1921. A second takeover in 1940 brought Ministry of Works offices, followed by DHSS use until 1976. Demolition and redevelopment plans then sparked a preservation drive largely orchestrated by Neil Rhind. The Blackheath Preservation Trust bought the halls, raised restoration funds, reopened the Recital Room in 1986 and brought the large Concert Hall back in 1991. Trinity College of Music acquired the site in 2003, ahead of its later role within Trinity Laban.
Flexible by design
Programming combines venue-presented work, Trinity Laban student performances and hires by professional, student and community artists. Classical, folk, jazz, rock, pop, country and R&B share the diary with comedy, musical theatre and community opera. The Great Hall offers 500 formal theatre seats, 250 cabaret seats or up to 1,000 standing. A 2018 redevelopment levelled the stage, added a retractable raked seating bank and enlarged the café bar; the smaller Hearn Recital Room seats 160 in a formal layout.
