About Barfly Camden

Barfly Camden is a 200-capacity live room in London, above a ground-floor bar on Chalk Farm Road. Its distinguishing feature is a fresh 2026 revival of a name tied to the site’s early-2000s gig history: Frank Turner played the reopening show on 22 June. The room forms part of a 400-capacity, two-floor venue, giving a small-show feel while the building also accommodates bar traffic and private spaces.

A pub becomes a Barfly, then returns

The building began as The Monarch, a Victorian pub with a live-music lineage reaching back to the 1970s. Barfly promoters had begun staging shows at nearby Falcon in 1996, then moved into The Monarch in 2000 and gave the Chalk Farm Road site its Barfly identity. That move made an upstairs pub room the flagship setting for a wider venue brand.

A major break came in 2016, when financial pressure brought the Barfly operation to a close and the building reopened after refurbishment as Camden Assembly. In 2026, Propaganda Independent Venues founders Dan Ickowitz-Seidler and Richard Buck joined Camden musician Chris McCormack to restore the Barfly name. Turner’s 22 June launch set the first night of the renewed chapter, ten years after the earlier closure.

The room now

The booking approach centres on bands building an audience, with occasional underplay shows by established artists. Rock, alternative, indie, pop, folk, metal, electronic and R&B all fit the bill, alongside club nights. Expect the concert room upstairs and the refurbished bar downstairs: the latter now works as a vinyl listening bar, with a 1959 AMI jukebox, records, music photographs and venue artefacts. Refreshed PA and lighting are part of the relaunch.
