About Aces & Eights
Aces & Eights is a 50-capacity basement room beneath a Tufnell Park bar in London, built for close-range shows, comedy and club-adjacent bills. Its defining feature sits below the old bank: the venue occupies a former Barclays strongroom, recast as a speakeasy-style performance space with its own bar. For concertgoers, that means a compact audience, a corner stage and the social ease of a downstairs room attached to a late-running neighbourhood saloon.
From failed bank bar to basement billings
The building began as a late-19th-century bank at the Fortess Road and Brecknock Road junction. After banking left, the site passed through Bar Lorca and Grand Banks; local reporting records both ventures as failed by 2004, followed by an Occupied Social Centre that presented cultural events. Aces & Eights arrived about five years later, giving the address its current musical identity.
A 2010 London Drinker update catches the change in real time: Bar Lorca had been renamed Aces and Eights Bar and described as a blues music venue. Four years later, the Kentishtowner marked the bar’s fourth anniversary with Live at Aces, a free two-day festival whose programme split acoustic sets upstairs from full bands downstairs. That early format still explains the place well: a bar with an intimate performance room, suited to bills where proximity carries as much weight as production scale.
How the room works now
Today, Aces & Eights presents live music alongside regular comedy, and welcomes promoters to arrange viewings with its team; the basement also takes private hires, album launches and shoots. Music programming has room for rock, indie, folk, alternative pop, electronic nights, hip-hop and country-leaning bills. The physical setup is practical and compact: a draped corner stage, dedicated green room, full PA, monitors and digital desk, plus a separate basement bar. Seating can shift for comedy and theatre-style events, while standing gigs place the crowd close to the performers.
