About 606 Club

The 606 Club is a 120-seat, seated basement jazz restaurant in Chelsea, London, with music every night and Sunday lunches. Its defining feature is a programming rule built around British-based players, a policy owner and musician Steve Rubie says grew from the club’s early musician following. The result is a compact room where jazz anchors bills that also reach into soul, Latin, R&B, blues, gospel and groove.

A move that made the room

The club began at 606 King’s Road: Stephen Cartwright took it over in 1969 and established it as a jazz venue, with a 30-person licence and a late-night culture of musicians sitting in after other gigs. Rubie, then a working flautist who had also cooked at the club, assumed control in 1976. He kept the name and shifted the operation toward booked British-based artists, giving performers rooted in the UK scene a regular stage.

Redevelopment at King’s Road forced the next decisive change. In May 1988, the 606 relocated to its present Lots Road basement; Rubie later recalled Ronnie Scott opening the new room with his band. Thirty years later, the club marked the move with a May 2018 festival: Jamie Cullum headlined a sold-out special, while Claire Martin and Jim Mullen closed the run on the anniversary date.

Dinner, close quarters, British-based bills

Expect table seating, a restaurant rhythm and a basement atmosphere instead of a standing-room club format. The 606 presents live music seven nights a week, centring jazz and improvised music while making room for blues, Latin, soul, singer-songwriters, gospel and occasional rock. Its 1988 restaurant licence shapes the evening: visitors without membership can drink alcohol while dining, and bookings receive priority. Air conditioning and full air extraction support a long, close-set supper-and-show session.
