About 229 The Venue
229 The Venue in London is a two-room live-music space whose principal hall, Venue 1, holds 620 standing. Its main distinction is scale with flexibility: the square 15m-by-15m room has a five-metre ceiling, a raised stage up to nine metres wide, and a seated format for 328. A smaller Venue 2 adds a 140-standing basement option, making 229 suited to full-band bills, club-focused nights and close-range showcases alike.
A relaunch in the main room
The clearest public marker in 229’s recent story comes from 2014. On 12 June that year, the venue reopened its main room after a £300,000 refurbishment, presented through a relaunch show with Molotov Jukebox and Alex Butler and the Opals. The work included a motorised lighting rig and focused on the 620-capacity hall, giving the present-day concert space a defined reset point. That event also captures the venue’s useful middle ground: a room large enough for a substantial standing crowd, yet available for a mixed bill with a dance-minded headliner and an emerging support act. Current hire material shows the building continuing in that adaptable mode, with promoters able to use either room in standing or seated configurations.
Two rooms, promoter-led programming
229 operates as a hire-led venue for promoters and event organisers, with standard main-room timings built around afternoon load-in, 7pm doors and an 11pm live-music curfew. Its programming range runs through hip-hop, pop, R&B, Latin, metal, rock, indie and electronic bills. Venue 1 supplies the larger concert experience, with d&b sound, delays serving the rear of the hall and front-of-house positioned at the back-left corner. Venue 2 is the tighter alternative: a 7.6m-by-14m basement room reached by one flight of stairs, with its mixer at the back centre. Venue 1 usually provides a cloakroom for standing events; the building also includes the Thirsty Scholar café-bar.
