Avant Garden

AvantGarden is a Houston venue with an advertised event capacity of up to 200, set inside an 1896 house on Westheimer. Its defining feature is scale in miniature: three performance areas spread across a converted three-story home, with stages upstairs, downstairs, and outdoors. For concertgoers, that creates a close-range setting for jazz, singer-songwriters, experimental players, and bills that can also include poetry or burlesque.

A house remade for performance

The building began as a private mansion, later associated with Murray Davis’s scale business and repair shop. Mariana Lemesoff took over a worn-down property and converted its two stories and attic into a club; it opened as the Mausoleum in 1996. The darkly named room became Helios in 2000, then took its current AvantGarden name in 2007. Those successive identities matter because they explain the venue’s unusually broad programming: the club developed as a performance space first, then kept expanding the kinds of work that fit inside its rooms.

The current name arrived with a continued commitment to adventurous music. Houston Chronicle’s venue guide identifies jazz as a long-running part of the program and names sound-poet Jaap Blonk and Borbetomagus saxophonist Jim Sauter among the players welcomed there. That history sits alongside weekly spoken-word, burlesque, and art events, giving the calendar a house-party range without leaving live performance behind.

The room today

AvantGarden books local and touring musicians, while owner Mariana Lemesoff’s curation emphasizes local artists and creative communities. Jazz is the clearest musical throughline, with acoustic sets, electronic music, salsa, singer-songwriters, and experimental work also in the mix. Expect a rambling house layout instead of a single black-box room: indoor stages sit upstairs and downstairs, an outdoor stage reaches the patio, and bars and seating appear across the property. The experience suits listeners comfortable moving between rooms and event formats.
