About Bronze Peacock at House of Blues

Bronze Peacock at House of Blues is Houston’s up-to-200-capacity small room, set inside the larger downtown House of Blues complex. Its name carries a specific local music lineage: it honors Don Robey’s Fifth Ward Bronze Peacock Dinner Club, the place tied to Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown’s 1947 breakthrough and the birth of Peacock Records. The current room offers an intimate setting, a lighted stage, and its own character beside the building’s large Music Hall.

A club name that became a record-label name

The story begins in 1945, when Houston promoter Don Robey opened the Bronze Peacock Dinner Club. Robey booked leading jazz bands and orchestras there, building a successful Fifth Ward nightspot. Two years later, during a 1947 T-Bone Walker concert, Walker fell ill; Brown took the stage, played “Gatemouth Boogie,” and drew an enthusiastic response. Robey soon arranged Brown’s first recording deal, then launched Peacock Records in 1949 to issue Brown’s music. Brown’s Peacock single “Mary Is Fine” reached No. 8 on the R&B chart. In 1953, as the label expanded, Robey converted the former club at 2809 Erastus into Peacock’s office and recording-studio base. House of Blues later gave its smaller room the Bronze Peacock name in tribute to that original club.

The room today

Programming runs on two tracks: ticketed shows receive a dedicated Bronze Peacock calendar, while House of Blues also markets the space for private concerts, dinners, and cocktail receptions. The concert bill ranges across hip-hop, indie, folk, country, R&B, pop, alternative, and rock. Expect a compact 2,211-square-foot room with a private entrance, painted folk-art décor, a lighted stage, and a standing reception capacity of 200; theater seating reaches 125. That scale favors close-range performances and quick access to the stage.
