CCHA

CCHA is Hasselt’s multi-room cultural centre, built for concerts alongside theatre, dance and visual arts. Its principal concert and theatre hall holds 881 seated listeners, split between a 732-seat parterre and a 149-seat balcony. The standout for music fans sits next door: a 318-seat small theatre equipped with d&b Soundscape, an immersive system that places individual sounds around the room. Expect a seated, attentive concert experience with serious production resources, plus a programme broad enough for experimental electronics, jazz, indie, pop, classical work and heavier bookings.

Built to give Limburg a proper stage

Hasselt’s municipal council decided in 1956 to create a cultural centre after identifying a shortage of suitable theatre infrastructure in Limburg. Architect Isia Isgour, working with Louis Peeters and Etienne Vreven, designed the complex as a modernist composition of concrete, steel and large glass facades; the first stone was laid on May 18, 1967, and director Piet Jaspaert opened the venue on November 4, 1972.

A substantial main-hall renewal began with a 2005 decision by the city and the CCHA association. A2O’s work increased capacity, improved acoustics, brought the audience closer into the stage action and created a more flexible proscenium. In late 2019, CCHA’s smaller theatre became Europe’s first theatre venue fitted with Soundscape through AMPTEC. The system has since supported residencies, try-outs and immersive concerts, including work by Echo Collective and Svínhunder.

The room today

CCHA presents itself as an open house for spoken word, music, dance and image, while also hosting guest events and offering its spaces for rental with an in-house support service. For a concertgoer, the choice of room matters: the main hall is a traditional raked seated theatre with balcony sightlines, orchestra-pit flexibility, a d&b Yi8 sound system and a fixed projection screen. The smaller hall offers 318 seats and the Soundscape setup; it is the pick for shows built around spatial audio, close listening or adventurous production. A Theatre Café handles drinks and catering within the building.
