Viernulvier

Viernulvier in Ghent stages concerts inside De Vooruit, a 1914 workers’ assembly hall whose principal Concert Hall holds up to 1,110 standing listeners. Its musical life sits inside a larger arts centre: the building still has five active event halls, including the Concert Hall and Theatre Hall. For gig-goers, the draw is a large historic room shaped by balconies, murals, gilded ornament and stained glass instead of a standard black-box venue.

Built for workers, revived for a new public

The story begins in 1910, when the Vooruit cooperative bought a mansion and two adjoining houses on Sint-Pietersnieuwstraat to create a new festivities hall for Ghent’s socialist movement. Architect Ferdinand Dierkens designed the complex as a “House of the People,” with a restaurant, library, meeting and rehearsal rooms, plus a Concert Hall for 1,000 spectators and a Theatre Hall for 1,600. The first annual May Day banquet took place there on May 1, 1914.

After decades of dwindling maintenance and departing associations, a young group formed the non-profit Socio-Cultural Centre Vooruit in 1982 to clean up, rehabilitate and reopen the building as a progressive arts meeting place. The reopening weekend of September 17–19, 1982 brought thousands through its corridors for tours, performances, theatre and a dance; pop and rock concerts soon followed in the lower hall. Protected-monument status arrived in 1983, helping underpin the restoration work.

The room today

The Concert Hall is a 626-square-metre flexible space used standing or seated, with balconies, a foyer and bars folded into the room’s ornate original fabric. Viernulvier programs music alongside performing arts, debate and nightlife, with visual-art projects also entering the mix. Expect a broad slate spanning indie, metal, electronic music, hip-hop, jazz, folk and classical-facing work; the venue suits listeners who value stylistic range as much as a single-genre scene.
