Club Wintercircus

Club Wintercircus is a 600-capacity underground music venue in Ghent, tucked beneath the restored Winter Circus complex. Its defining feature is a circular, reconfigurable room built around immersive audio and visuals: L-Acoustics L-ISA sound, five front-of-house arrays, 20-plus full-range speakers, an 11-metre LED wall and projection screens around the space. That equipment makes the room especially suited to artists whose sets treat sound and image as part of the performance, while still keeping the scale firmly in club territory.

A circus, a fire and a return to performance

The story begins in 1885, when architect Emile De Weerdt designed Ghent’s “New Circus” as a permanent venue for circus companies. A 1920 fire almost destroyed the building; reconstruction followed in 1923. After the Second World War, Ghislain Mahy converted the former circus into a car workshop, a change that removed the original circus interior. The workshop operated until 1978, followed by years as a vintage-car depot.

The city development agency sogent bought the building in 2005 for renovation and reuse within the De Krook district. Following five years of intensive restoration, Wintercircus reopened in 2024: its central arena became a covered public passage, while the club took shape below ground. The current concert room is therefore a new venue inside a building with a much longer performance history, carrying its past through the surrounding architecture instead of reproducing a period-style theatre.

What the room delivers now

Club Wintercircus accepts proposals from artists across genres at medium capacity, so its programme can move between live concerts, electronic nights, audiovisual work, hybrid events, residencies and try-outs. The calendar’s broad stylistic range makes sense in a room designed for rapid changes of floor and stage configuration. For a showgoer, the practical draw is the 360-degree potential: circular sightlines, immersive speaker placement and in-house sound engineering can make a DJ set, heavy band or visual-led performance feel deliberately spatial. Backstage hospitality and rear loading support full productions, while the venue’s stated 100 dB LAeq15min limit frames its operating level.
