About Podium Mozaïek
Podium Mozaïek is een cultuurpodium in Amsterdam-West met een theaterzaal voor maximaal 350 bezoekers. Het zit in de voormalige Pniëlkerk, een wederopbouwgebouw uit 1954 waarvan de gevel met glazen bouwstenen het pand zijn bijnaam „het theelichtje” gaf. Voor concertpubliek zit het onderscheid in de opstelling: ruime zitplaatsen kijken vanaf drie kanten uit op een centraal speelvlak, waardoor een solist, ensemble of spoken-wordact dichtbij blijft.
Van Pniëlkerk naar cultuurpodium
De gereformeerde Pniëlkerk werd gebouwd in 1954 naar ontwerp van B.T. Boeyinga. Begin 2001 kwam het gebouw vrij; woningcorporatie Het Oosten kocht het in 2002 met wijkvoorzieningen als doel. De herbestemming bracht een cultuurpodium en huisartsenpraktijk onder één dak. Tijdens de planvorming vroegen beide functies om veel ruimte, waarna de praktijk in de consistorie kwam en het theaterprogramma compacter werd om het karakter van het gebouw te bewaren.
Stichting Multicultureel Podium Mozaïek nam de verbouwing en exploitatie op zich. De officiële opening volgde op 30 augustus 2005. Architecten voegden een nieuwe vloer toe ter hoogte van de oorspronkelijke balkons: boven ontstond de zaal, onder de foyer en repetitiestudio’s. De glazen bouwstenen in de gevel bleven onderdeel van het ontwerp, zodat het kerkhuis herkenbaar bleef in zijn nieuwe rol.
De zaal en programmering nu
Podium Mozaïek programmeert muziek naast theater, dans, comedy, storytelling en spoken word, met aandacht voor makers uit Amsterdam-West en internationale gezelschappen. Het werkt ook als productiehuis en ondersteunt nieuwe stemmen met eigen producties en langdurige samenwerkingen. De theaterzaal ligt op de tweede verdieping en heeft professionele licht- en geluidsinstallatie; drie zijden met zitplaatsen richten de blik op de vlakke vloer. Beneden vormen café, foyer, restaurant en bar een tweede verblijfsruimte voor of na de voorstelling.
