About Sam's Burger Joint

Sam’s Burger Joint in San Antonio is a 500-person room where a burger restaurant and full concert hall share the same operation. Its album-shaped neon sign, visible from Highway 281, gives the place a clear marker beside the Pearl area. The draw for a show is close-range scale: the hall has a permanent stage and has accommodated roughly 250 seated people or 500 standing, depending on configuration.

Two Empty Buildings, Then the Sam Dome

Sam Panchevre signed the lease in 1999 for two empty buildings on East Grayson, in a stretch beside a Highway 281 underpass and across from contaminated industrial land. He opened Sam’s that year with co-founder Tom Honigblum, before Pearl redevelopment reshaped the surrounding blocks. A clear early marker of the music-hall ambition arrived in April 2010: Sam’s remodeled the hall known as the “Sam Dome” while programming its Jazz Market series, with bills including the Jazz Barber Quintet, Aaron Lack and the Julio Dominguez Orchestra. The venue marked its 25th year in October 2024 with a five-night concert series, linking its restaurant roots to a dedicated live-music operation.

How the Room Works

Sam’s books a wide local-and-touring mix: blues, indie rock, rockabilly, swing, country, Americana, soul and funk all appear in its stated lane. Plan around a general-admission floor: seating is first come, first served, and the hall usually runs standing or mixed seated-and-standing. Reserved booths are available, with admission purchased separately. Most shows carry an 18-plus policy, with show-specific age rules. A full bar, restaurant service and permanent stage put dinner and a show under one roof.
