About Smoke Jazz Club

Smoke Jazz Club is a 125-capacity listening room in New York City, shaped around acoustic jazz and supper-club seating. Its distinguishing feature is a post-2022 split plan: concerts occupy a dedicated, candlelit listening room while the former full-length bar operates next door in a lounge. That arrangement keeps the stage-focused room compact while giving the venue a larger footprint for food, drinks, and conversation.

A jazz bar’s second act

Smoke occupies the room that housed Augie’s Jazz Bar from the mid-1970s through 1998. Paul Stache arrived in New York in 1992, joined Augie’s staff, and moved from dishwasher to bartender; when Augie’s abruptly closed in 1998, he arranged to take the lease and opened Smoke with Frank Christopher. Smoke began on April 9, 1999, with George Coleman’s quartet featuring pianist Harold Mabern. The Coleman connection also marked the post-pandemic return: after indoor shows and dining paused for over two years, Smoke reopened in July 2022 with Coleman playing four nights, July 21–24. The pause also accelerated an expansion, adding adjacent space and relocating the long bar into a separate lounge.

Music first, with room to linger

Smoke programs accessible, timeless jazz, placing established performers, modern masters, and rising artists on the same calendar; reporting around its reopening describes a house sound centered on mainstream and post-bop styles. Stache has said quality drives selection, alongside the practical need for artists who draw an audience. The concert room brings together tuned acoustics, candlelit tables, velvet curtains, banquettes, exposed brick, and chandeliers. The adjoining lounge holds the bar and café seating, giving diners a space apart from the bandstand.
