About Radio City Music Hall
Radio City Music Hall is a 6,000-capacity seated theater in Midtown Manhattan, within Rockefeller Center. Its defining feature is the Great Stage: an 84-foot-wide, hydraulically engineered performance floor beneath a 100-foot proscenium, built for productions with genuine scale. The room carries the geometry of a 1930s movie palace into concert presentation, with sweeping Art Deco arches, a block-long marquee, and an auditorium designed without view-blocking columns.
A theater saved from the office plan
Radio City arrived during the Depression as part of John D. Rockefeller Jr.’s Rockefeller Center project. Completed in 1932, it brought architect Edward Durell Stone, interior designer Donald Deskey, and movie-palace showman Samuel “Roxy” Rothafel into one Art Deco theater. The Hall opened on December 27, 1932, with a variety bill featuring Martha Graham, Ray Bolger, and Doc Rockwell; its six-hour program ran from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., and audience members left before the finish. Two weeks later, film-and-stage presentations began with The Bitter Tea of General Yen.
The survival story sharpened in 1978. A $2.3 million deficit in 1977 led Rockefeller Center leadership to announce closure amid plans for office conversion. The interior received New York City landmark designation on March 28, the hall shuttered on April 12, and a public rescue effort kept the building intact. A live-performance-centered plan followed in 1979; renovation and reopening came in 1980.
A grand-scale seated show
Today, booking encompasses popular concerts, stage shows, special attractions, media events, selected film premieres, and the Rockettes’ seasonal productions. For music audiences, the calendar spans classical, alternative, rock, pop, Latin, folk, R&B, and indie bills. Three shallow mezzanines rise behind the orchestra, while the 160-foot auditorium holds the stage in one broad frame. This is a fixed-seat theater built for long sightlines, large visual production, and performers who can command a very large room.
