About Market Hotel

Market Hotel is an all-ages concert hall in Bushwick, Brooklyn, with capacity varying by event configuration; its official site leaves a single public figure unpublished. The distinguishing detail is architectural and immediate: the room occupies the second floor of a 140-year-old former Corn Bank building, above Mr Kiwi Grocery and facing the elevated subway at Myrtle–Broadway. That train-level setting gives the space a distinctly urban frame before any band reaches the stage.

From shuttered club to licensed hall

The building began as a Corn Bank branch in the late 1870s. Its upstairs became a neighborhood nightclub in the 1960s, operating as the Bristol Room and Broadway Chateau and presenting merengue, salsa, house music, and early Latin hip-hop. An enforcement crackdown following the 1990 Happyland fire left the room shuttered through the early 2000s.

Artists reopened the space in January 2008 as Market Hotel, initially running guerrilla all-ages shows inside the unrenovated former club. NYPD forced a public closure in April 2010, setting off a years-long effort to fund code-compliant renovations. The rebuilt room returned for a public show on December 16, 2015, with Sleater-Kinney’s reunion-tour stop serving as the high-profile reopening marker. A Certificate of Occupancy and full liquor license arrived in June 2018, establishing the venue as a full-time concert hall.

What the room offers now

Market Hotel can host events any night, carries an all-ages policy, and operates a full bar for guests 21 and older. Its calendar makes room for metal and folk alongside the electronic, punk, and experimental currents associated with its earlier programming. Renovations added a new stage, sound attenuation, a new sound system, fixed seating, upgraded ventilation, an elevator, and new bathrooms. Expect an upstairs, close-range room with the elevated tracks as its defining visual backdrop; the bar and seating offer useful breathing room between sets.
