About King's Theatre
King’s Theatre in Flatbush, Brooklyn, is a live-entertainment house with seating for over 3,000. Its calling card is scale with ornament: a French Renaissance auditorium shaped by references to the Palace of Versailles and the Paris Opera House, plus a grand stage built for major touring productions. The current room combines that 1929 movie-palace setting with contemporary sound and lighting, making the visual experience part of the night from the moment the curtain rises.
A palace, a long silence, a reopening night
Loew’s built the theatre in 1929 as one of five “Wonder Theatres” across New York and New Jersey. It screened films and presented vaudeville, with 3,676 seats in its original configuration; the immense room gave Flatbush a cinema house on the scale of a downtown destination. After postwar decline, Kings closed on August 30, 1977, and water damage accelerated through the vacant years.
In 2009, NYCEDC joined former Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and ACE Theatrical Group on a $95 million conversion into a performance venue. A two-year restoration brought the theatre back in January 2015, retaining and recreating details such as chandeliers, plasterwork, walnut paneling, curtains, and marble finishes. Diana Ross gave the inaugural performance on February 3, 2015, a sold-out opening night that put live music at the center of the building’s second life.
The concert experience
Kings is a seated, large-format theatre suited to artists whose shows benefit from a focused stage picture, with an orchestra floor and balcony framing the proscenium. Its calendar takes a broad promoter-led approach: pop and R&B tours sit alongside jazz-adjacent bills, Latin artists, folk-rock, film-with-orchestra events, comedy, talks, family programming, and community events. Current listings include BINI, Ravyn Lenae, Thundercat, Bunbury, Jorja Smith, Lord Huron, and several concert-film presentations. State-of-the-art sound and lighting, plus exclusive lounges, support a polished theatre-night format instead of a club atmosphere.
