About Gold Sounds

Gold Sounds is a 125-capacity Bushwick bar venue whose shows happen in a separate back room, leaving the front bar available for a drink, a game of pool, or the jukebox between sets. The Wilson Avenue room began life in its present form in 2016 and keeps the scale close: a dark, small-room presentation where band and audience share the same compressed energy. Its name comes from Pavement’s “Gold Soundz,” an apt clue to the guitar-minded lean of many bills.

A bar rebuilt for bills

Gold Sounds opened in March 2016 at the former Morgan Town Bar, after Cenk Eryaman and Chip Su—operators of booking agency New Island Entertainment and part-owners of The Shop Brooklyn—renovated the room for live music. Their aim was a neighborhood bar with local acts most nights and inexpensive covers; thick insulated walls and a sealed doorway between bar and performance room addressed the practical strain of amplified shows.

Its soft opening placed the concept onstage immediately: Brook Pridemore, Teenage Halloween, Kung Fu Crimewave, True Dreams and Endless Mike & The Beagle Club played a free March 2016 bill. Two days later, the planned March 10 grand opening put Mattie Safer of the Rapture atop the bill, with Alyson Greenfield opening. Those first bills show the house template: local-scene cross-pollination, short distance between performers and barstools, and a program built for discovery.

Two rooms, one show night

Today’s calendar is centered on compact, multi-act bills, with rock, alternative, metal and indie alongside pop and electronic shows. The 125-capacity limit suits audiences who want proximity and bills that move quickly. Expect a bar-first layout: the performance room sits behind the main bar, while the front space has leather-topped stools, a 1976 AMI 45-rpm jukebox, a red-felt pool table and movie-playing TVs. The back room received a dedicated modern sound system when the venue launched.
