About Barclays Center

Barclays Center is Brooklyn’s 19,000-capacity concert arena, built at Atlantic and Flatbush as the first completed building in the Atlantic Yards development. Its distinguishing feature is scale shaped for proximity: the venue describes its seating as among the most intimate configurations in a modern multipurpose arena, aiming its large bowl toward strong views of the stage. Outside, SHoP Architects’ weathered-steel skin gives the wedge-shaped building an industrial look amid Downtown Brooklyn’s busiest junction.

An arena opened by a Brooklyn homecoming

Forest City developed Barclays Center with AECOM and SHoP Architects; the venue opened on September 28, 2012. Its arrival brought a major civic dispute into plain view: protesters gathered at the opening-week ribbon cutting, challenging the project’s development record and jobs commitments. The public debate formed part of the building’s origin story, alongside the Nets’ move into Brooklyn and the arena’s place in the wider Atlantic Yards plan.

Music supplied the opening statement. Brooklyn-born JAY-Z began an eight-night sold-out residency on September 28, 2012, turning the first show into a hometown event with “Where I’m From” and “Brooklyn Go Hard.” The October 6 finale included a Beyoncé appearance, closing the run that christened the arena as a concert room as much as a basketball home.

The room today

Programming is arena-scale and multi-format, spanning major concerts alongside basketball, boxing, family shows and college sports; pop, R&B, hip-hop, electronic and Latin bills fit naturally into that mix. For concertgoers, the key practical upside is the close-set seating bowl and its stated emphasis on sightlines, with a full concert configuration reaching 19,000. On the upper concourse, Modelo Bridge provides a 67-foot bar open to all guests, while Gallagher Terrace serves as a premium, 110-guest option with in-seat dining.
