Barbès is a roughly 70-capacity bar and performance room in Brooklyn’s South Slope, with a larger front bar leading into a compact back room for music. Its distinguishing feature is range with a clear curatorial bent: Peruvian cumbia, Balkan brass, experimental jazz and Western classical music can share the weekly orbit. The scale keeps performers and listeners in immediate range, creating an attentive, close-up experience instead of a distant-stage spectacle.

Built for cross-pollination

Barbès opened on May Day 2002, started by French expat working musicians Olivier Conan and Vincent Douglas. They converted a former barber shop on a shoestring into a place for Brooklyn artists seeking room for original, less commercial projects; in 2004, Conan added the Barbès recording agency to release work by artists connected to the club. Its sharpest stress test arrived in 2020. With indoor live music halted, Conan converted the performance space into a bottle shop, launching retail sales on November 23 as a way through the winter. By May 2022, Barbès marked its 20th year with a celebratory program featuring Red Baraat, Son Rompe Pera, Ethan Lipton, Mamie Minch and Tamar Korn.

How the room plays

Booking favors acoustic music, with improvised music, Americana, international traditions and classical repertory all part of the house language. Rock bands, electric bass, conventional singer-songwriters and straight-ahead jazz appear only occasionally, according to the venue’s booking guidance. Expect a bar-first layout: the front room serves as the social hub, while performances happen in the small rear room, described by Condé Nast Traveler as scarlet-ceilinged. Arrive ready for a compact, close-range set, with the bar available before and after the music.
