Arsonic

Arsonic is a 280-seat adjustable concert room in Mons, built around listening as intensely as performance. The former fire-station conversion holds its audience close to a central playing area, with small and large banks of seats, a discreet balcony, and removable projection screens shaping the room. Its calling card is acoustic flexibility: seating can run along three sides of the stage, giving chamber music, jazz, and new work a focused, almost in-the-round feel.

Sirens gave way to sound

Arsonic opened to the public across April 3–5, 2015, during Mons 2015, the city’s European Capital of Culture year. The project remade the Rue de Nimy fire brigade building as a concert, recording, exhibition, and sound-art space. Composer, cellist, and Musiques Nouvelles artistic director Jean-Paul Dessy conceived the project; architects Holoffe & Vermeersch developed it with acoustician Eckhard Kahle. The conversion retained part of the earlier structure while adding a purpose-designed performance environment across three levels.

Its opening established a lasting home for Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles, which has been resident at Arsonic since 2015. That relationship gives the room a clear artistic center: the ensemble’s work supports contemporary creation from Wallonia and Brussels while presenting emerging international artists. The inaugural public weekend also framed Arsonic as a place for listening beyond the concert itself, an approach still visible in its sound installations and dedicated listening spaces.

The room today

Arsonic operates as a presenting house within Mars–Mons arts de la scène, alongside concerts mounted with Musiques Nouvelles, the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie, and the Royal Conservatory of Mons. The program leans toward classical music, jazz, world music, and contemporary creation, with festival bills also bringing folk, soul, rock, opera, and electronic work into the mix. Expect seated shows calibrated to the hall’s flexible tiers and acoustic curtains; a bar opens an hour before and after concerts.
