About Kunstencentrum nona
Kunstencentrum nona is Mechelen’s two-room arts venue, with a stated maximum event capacity of 300 people and an Old Hall that seats 110. Its defining feature is the pairing of a protected former cinema-theatre with a former printing works remade as the Golden Hall: concertgoers get a historic, close-scale room alongside a contemporary black-box space with far greater flexibility.
A cinema, then a new passage through the block
The organisation was registered in 1986, while its present Begijnenstraat story grew from Ciné Studio, a cinema established in 1965 in the former Frascati hall. After the building changed hands in 1991, the owner reached an agreement with theatre company Theaterteater, which converted the cinema auditorium into a theatre; in June 2001, that association became Kunstencentrum nona.
Space pressures produced the second decisive change. When neighbouring printing premises became available in 1999, nona created three temporary rehearsal rooms called nOva. Renovation and expansion began in 2016, and the rebuilt centre reopened in 2020. The project threaded the old and new buildings together through restored alleyways and courtyards, giving the venue a compact, walk-through character unusual for a concert room.
What the rooms offer now
Nona’s programming reaches across theatre, dance, music and visual art, with a dedicated JazzLab+ programmer handling jazz co-productions and development, plus Nova Express programming from January 2026. For live music, expect a curator-led arts-centre bill instead of a single-genre club format. The Old Hall brings a foyer and street-facing bar; the Golden Hall supplies a black box with retractable bleachers and an open floor, plus a bright adjacent forum. That combination suits seated listening sets, flexible performance staging and post-show conversation.
