Opéra Royal de Wallonie

Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège is a 1,041-seat opera house in Liège, housed in the Théâtre Royal on Place de l’Opéra. Its defining feature is the collision of eras: an 1820 neoclassical theatre and Italian-style auditorium, restored during a major overhaul, sit beneath a contemporary addition that increased the stage tower’s capacity for ambitious scenic work. This is a formal seated room made for voices, orchestra, ballet and theatrical scale.

A theatre remade for opera

The building began with a royal condition. In 1816, King William I transferred the site and materials of Liège’s former Dominican convent to the city on the understanding that a theatre would rise there. Auguste Dukers designed the new Théâtre Royal, inaugurated on November 4, 1820. The present Opéra Royal de Wallonie organisation arrived in 1967 and has occupied the theatre since its creation.

Its defining modern interruption came in March 2009, when a full restoration and technical renovation closed the house. The company continued performances in the temporary Palais Opéra tent on the Bavière site while the historic foyer, grand staircase and auditorium were renewed. Liège inaugurated the rebuilt opera on September 19, 2012; the project also added a modern volume above the historic structure and renewed stage and scenographic systems.

A repertory house with stage muscle

Public booking follows a season-led repertory model centred on opera: the 2026–27 programme lists nine operas, a ballet engagement and one symphonic concert, with ten new productions. Verdi, Ravel, Wagner, Donizetti, Strauss and Puccini frame the core musical language, while contemporary dance and newly commissioned work widen the edges. The Italian-style main room and advanced stage machinery suit productions that need orchestral depth and full scenic movement. Separate spaces can also be hired for events, with venue staff and an opera-house technician included.
