Stellwerk Hamburg

Stellwerk Hamburg is a 199-capacity club inside Hamburg-Harburg station, on the first floor between long-distance platforms 3 and 4. Its concert room grew from railway infrastructure: the space once served the station as a waiting room and later as a teaching signal box. That rail-bound setting gives the venue its defining character, while a separate lounge adds room for parties and multi-room bills.

A Signal Box Turned Club

The Förderverein Jazzclub Hamburg e. V., formed in 2001 by Dieter Glawischnig, singer Ulita Knaus and Heiko Langanke, opened the venue on September 15, 2005. Before that conversion, the room had been the station’s third-class waiting room, followed by a Deutsche Bahn training facility where staff learned simulated route-setting. The name Stellwerk retained that railway connection. After six years and 800-plus concerts, the jazz-focused operator stepped away at the end of 2011 amid severe financial strain. A team associated with Grossstadtraum took over in January 2012, broadening the bill toward hip-hop, funk, soul and other formats while keeping occasional jazz. In 2015, bass complaints from federal-police offices below put concert operations at risk; an agreement with Deutsche Bahn and local authorities expanded activity into the rear baggage bridge, a room better suited to bass-heavy events.

How the Room Works

Stellwerk’s present-day booking reaches across rap, electronic music, rock and heavier guitar bills; the club’s current listings also include soul, psych-rock, darkwave and metal. The venue is run through a named booking team and rents its rooms for public and closed events, using rental income to cross-subsidize subcultural programming. In the main room, a fixed tribune creates a raised viewing area behind the floor, while the bar, installed sound system and flexible stage elements keep the setup geared toward compact, standing-room shows. The lounge has its own bar and sound system.
