About Sporthalle Hamburg

Sporthalle Hamburg is a 7,000-capacity concert hall in Winterhude, on the edge of Stadtpark. Its distinguishing feature is scale with flexibility: the same room can hold up to 4,200 seated concertgoers, then shift its stage and interior configuration for a standing-heavy tour. That puts it in a useful middle ground for artists whose production has outgrown clubs yet still benefits from a contained, communal room.

A sports hall finds its concert voice

Built in 1968 for major sport and show events, Sporthalle Hamburg began as an arena before its concert identity took shape. During the 1980s, after the Ernst-Merck-Halle disappeared, the building was reshaped into a more adaptable multipurpose venue with variable stage and floor arrangements. Its first concert came on March 26, 1984, when Nena played the Alsterdorfer Sporthalle on her European tour; the date gives the room a clear starting point in Hamburg’s pop-concert history. The shift carried real weight locally: city information records the hall as Hamburg’s largest venue for music and sport through 2002, before the newer large arena era changed the market. Sport remains part of the building’s character, so a show here arrives with arena bones instead of theatre formalities.

The live setup

The booking approach is broad and promoter-facing: concerts share the calendar with sport, fairs, parties and shows, while the music program spans hip-hop, metal, rock, alternative, folk, indie, pop and electronic. Expect a configurable main room, with seating layouts available alongside a larger open floor. Service is substantial for a hall of this size: eight permanent drink and sales points, plus mobile stands, handle beer, soft drinks and quick food such as pizza, fish rolls, sausages, pretzels and popcorn.
