About resonanzraum
resonanzraum is a 250-capacity chamber-music club in Hamburg’s St. Pauli, inside the Feldstraße bunker. Its signature idea is a concert room shaped for club energy: Ensemble Resonanz’s monthly urban string series places chamber music in dialogue with DJs and electronic art. The result suits listeners seeking close-range strings, exploratory programming and a room whose sound design serves amplified experimentation alongside focused acoustic sets.
Bunker, funding, and an early award
The setting carries an unavoidable past. The Feldstraße bunker was built in 1942 under Nazi rule as a propaganda building, flak tower and air-raid shelter; over 25,000 civilians sought cover there during Hamburg’s summer 1943 bombing raids. After years looking for a base, Ensemble Resonanz chose space in the protected former media bunker. A private founders’ board committed €200,000 in November 2013, Hamburg’s culture authority matched the sum, and renovation began after the lease was signed in early 2014. The club opened in October 2014. Its early record made the format tangible: resonanzraum hosted over 80 concerts in 2016, spanning workshops, philosophy talks and electronic series. In January 2017, the Hamburg Club Award named it Music Club of the Year for innovative concert programming.
The room today
Ensemble Resonanz uses resonanzraum as its home and experimental field, while the room remains available to visiting artists and outside promoters for concerts, performances and special projects. The programme leans toward classical music, jazz, electronic work and Latin-rooted events, with urban string providing the clearest house style. Expect a flexible single-room setup: a movable stage, rotating iron gates and a dividing curtain can reshape the floor, with an event-and-dance area, armchair retreat and large bar. The 250-person maximum keeps the scale firmly club-sized.
