Pony Bar

Pony Bar is a 100-person music café on Hamburg’s University campus, within the former Pferdestall building. Its defining feature is a small rear performance room: a 2004 report put its audience capacity at 80, while the venue’s current industry listing gives the full house a 100-person capacity. Daytime café life gives way to a late bar and culture programme, making this a particularly close-range place to catch a set.

A student project found its room

The building began as part of a luxury carriage business, with space for up to 200 horses; Hamburg’s Senate bought it in 1928 and converted it for the university. Student plans to activate its ground floor for culture had gathered momentum by 2000. Pony Bar opened in June 2004, founded through a student initiative, and took over two ground-floor rooms plus the exterior area on one side of the Pferdestall. Its early months came with a public dispute: a May 2004 report examined questions around the new Pferdestall Kultur GmbH, the lease, and the award of the catering operation. By December, the University of Hamburg described Pony Bar as the first stage of a self-financing student cultural centre. That autumn, the rear room was already hosting events almost nightly, with live music, jazz sessions, hip-hop activity, readings and parties across the week.

The room on show night

Pony Bar’s programme is broad by design: its cultural listing says admission is free in principle, while its music-sector entry records roughly 80 popular-music concerts a year. Expect singer-songwriters in the back room, open-mic rap, jazz around an aged piano, and DJ-led weekend nights; the venue’s own calendar also includes songwriter open stages. The compact rear room is the key practical detail for concertgoers, delivering short distances between performer and audience, while the café-bar setting and outdoor seating keep the evening feeling informal.
