About Mojo Club

Mojo Club is an 800-capacity live club beneath Hamburg’s Dancing Towers on the Reeperbahn. Its entrance begins in the pavement: two hydraulic gates lift to reveal a curved stairway descending 46 steps. That theatrical arrival leads into a concrete-and-wood room shaped for concerts and DJ nights, with dancefloor jazz, soul, hip-hop and electronic music central to its identity. The setting feels engineered for the transition from street-level Kiez bustle to a self-contained late-night floor.

A club rebuilt underground

Leif Nüske and Oliver Korthals started Mojo in 1989 as a mobile party series, first working from the shower rooms of Hamburg-Eppendorf’s former Holthusenbad. In 1991, the project found a permanent home in a disused 1950s bowling alley at Reeperbahn 1, where jazz, funk and breakbeat-inflected club music fed its dancefloor-jazz direction. The original room closed in 2003; its building was demolished in 2009 to make way for Hadi Teherani’s Dancing Towers. Mojo returned beneath that complex on February 2, 2013. One recorded bookend connects the two eras: John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” played at the 2003 farewell and again as the first record at the reopening.

Built for the floor and the stage

Mojo’s booking is selective: Nüske says the team receives plenty of proposals and rejects those outside the club’s fit. The calendar favors jazz and soul concert acts alongside funk, R&B, hip-hop, electronic music and DJ-led sessions. A 74-square-metre stage meets the central dancefloor, while a curved upper balcony gives elevated views across the room. Raw concrete, a wooden floor and movable wooden slat doors combine a spare visual design with acoustic control.
