Kulturschiff MS Altenwerder

Kulturschiff MS Altenwerder is a 90-capacity concert room moored in Hamburg’s Finkenwerder Kutterhafen. Its stage occupies a 1953 HADAG passenger ferry: the ship’s former engine and machinery area became a theatre hall after a 1979 shipyard accident ended its working life. That compact setting gives concerts a close-quarters, water-level perspective, with the vessel permanently fixed in the traditional harbor.

A ferry rescued for culture

Launched on 23 June 1953 by Ottensener Eisenwerke, the diesel-electric Altenwerder worked chiefly on HADAG’s Line 62. A refit at the von Cölln yard in 1978–79 turned disastrous when ice caused her to slip from the ways, leaving a total loss headed for scrapping. Finkenwerder’s youth-house support group later pursued the hull as a base for youth programs. After a scrapper took the vessel, four group members retrieved it by small launch, brought it to the Kutterhafen, and had a bailiff secure it; youth volunteers then kept night watch until the group bought it for DM20,000. A 1991 employment project restored basic structure, while the planned new engine proved too costly. The project shifted from youth boat to cultural ship, opening in 2004; a systematic 2018 build-out established continuous cultural programming.

A close-set room with a local brief

The registered association runs the vessel through volunteers, with booking led by Eckart Schmidt. Its charter centers concerts, readings and talks with Low German and maritime themes, while reserving opportunities for students and young artists. Expect a broad popular-music frame alongside locally rooted events: the venue lists roughly 30 popular-music concerts annually, monthly jam sessions, festivals and other community gatherings. Inside, the below-deck theatre hall and reworked stairs create a small, contained room for up to 90 people; the permanent berth keeps the harbor setting part of the experience.
