Kulturhaus 73

Kulturhaus 73, now presented as Haus 73, sits on Hamburg’s Schulterblatt as a compact, multi-room stop for concerts, club nights and stage work. Its headline concert capacity is 250 standing in the second-floor Saal, while the ground-floor Anbau holds up to 150. The defining feature is range under one roof: a balcony-equipped hall for live shows and talks, plus a windowless club room built for louder, later electronic nights.

A four-floor conversion beside the Flora

The building began its present life in 2006, when Pferdestall Kultur GmbH converted a former carpet house and later clothing-manufacturing site beside the Rote Flora into a cultural venue. In February that year, the operators described plans for an affordable programme aimed at young people and students; by July, Kulturhaus 73 opened its programme with the Kaltstart festival, pairing performances with food and bar service. Falk Hocquél, then managing director of Pferdestall Kultur, said work on the conversion had begun in April, with early events already running during the World Cup period.

The first year established the house’s mixed-use character at scale: Hamburg’s cultural directory records well above 500 events, including concerts, theatre, readings, parties and neighbourhood programming. That original breadth remains the useful clue for choosing a show here: the bill belongs to a wider house programme, with rooms designed to shift between listening, watching and dancing.

Picking the right room

Concert enquiries and public cultural proposals go through the house’s rental team, while party bookings have a separate DJ-booking contact. Pop, indie, rock, alternative, electronic and jazz all fit the current music profile. For a focused live set, the Saal offers a 40 m² stage, bar and an 82 m² balcony overlooking Schulterblatt. For electronic bills, choose the 50 m² Anbau: it is fully darkened, has a bar and club PA, and centres the room on the dancefloor.
