Inselpark Arena

Inselpark Arena is an up-to-3,000-capacity concert and multipurpose hall in Hamburg’s Wilhelmsburg district. Its defining feature is literal: the room began as the flower-show hall for the 2013 International Garden Show, then became a basketball hall and event space. That origin gives a gig here compact-arena scale inside the green setting of Inselpark. Concert crowds use the same adaptable floor built for sport, shows and large-format events.

A flower hall becomes a home court

Construction began in October 2011, and the completed building hosted six months of changing flower displays during the 2013 garden show. The next chapter came quickly: the hall was converted into a three-court sports venue with 3,000 seats, designed to house the Hamburg Towers alongside the InselAkademie’s sport, social and education work. The concept grew from Sport ohne Grenzen, the association co-founded in 2006 by former German international basketball player Marvin Willoughby.

Willoughby and Jan Fischer presented the Hamburg Towers in September 2013; after the garden show closed a month later, the former flower hall underwent roughly ten months of conversion. It reached basketball-ready completion in winter 2014 and became the Towers’ home. A 2017 naming-rights deal renamed the building edel-optics.de Arena; that agreement ended on March 31, 2024, restoring the Inselpark Arena name.

The room today

For shows, the arena works as a configurable mid-sized room: its 3,300-square-metre footprint includes retractable interior spectator stands, two LED screens and a 282-square-metre lounge with an integrated bar and full kitchen. The venue markets the hall for music and show events alongside corporate presentations, with seating and room orientation adjusted per production. Its concert programme covers rock, pop, metal, hip-hop, alternative, electronic and indie bills. Sightlines and the balance between floor space and seating will vary with each promoter’s setup.
